Doris V. Richardson Legacy

Doris Lewis was born in 1922 in Corsicana, Texas to John and Effie Lewis.

The family moved to Fort Worth where Doris attended I. M. Terrell High School, graduating in June 1939. Her father traveled with her to Tyler, where at the tender age of 16, she began her educational journey at Texas College. On May 19, 1943, Doris earned a BA in Sociology.

Her mother, Effie, hoping Doris would pursue a traditional career of teaching, contacted an acquaintance in Midland who offered room and board for this aspiring educator. Doris applied for a teaching position with Midland Independent School District and was hired September 1, 1943, earning $15 per week, working with four other teachers in a 5-room school house for African-American children.
