Discovering Hidden Figures

Freewill Advocates of Midland promotes reading by giving books to children through our project called “My Bookbag.” We recently shared a book titled, “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race,” by Margot Lee Shetterly.

Mary Jackson, a mathematician and aerospace engineer, was NASA’s first Black female engineer. Jackson, who was played by actor Janelle Monae in the movie “Hidden Figures,” started her NASA career at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

Did you know that NASA Administrator, Jim Bridenstine, announced on June 24, 2020, the agency’s headquarters building in Washington, D.C., will be named after Mary W. Jackson?
